Henry Braun Information Update
September 2010
I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all staff, students, parents/guardians and community members. We are excited to see all the new faces and those who are returning to Henry Braun this year.
Once again, Henry Braun has an outstanding staff that is thrilled to be working with your children. The staff has been busy working hard, meeting, planning and preparing for the year. We are committed to providing a positive learning environment where children can academically and socially grow and develop.
We believe your involvement and active participation in your child’s education is crucial to his/her success in school. We encourage you to share any information regarding your child’s life with the teacher. Together we can plan for options, adaptations and strategies that will enhance your child’s opportunities for learning. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Lunchroom Supervision
We are looking for community members to supervise a lunchroom at school on a full-time, part-time or substitute basis. These are paid positions that start at 11:45 a.m until 12:30 p.m. If you are interested, or know of someone who would be interested in these positions please contact the school office at 791-8548.
School Enrollment
As of September 2nd, we have 509 students enrolled at Henry Braun.
Lunchroom Note
All students staying for lunch on a regular or casual basis must complete a lunchroom registration form. Also, regular students MUST have a note/phone call when they are not staying and casual students MUST have a note/phone call on the day they are staying. Your diligence in phoning or writing a note will help us keep all children safe.
School Fees
Regina Public Schools will no longer be collecting a lump sum at the beginning of the school year for field trips. Notices requesting funds to cover transportation and/or admission fees will be sent home prior to each planned field trip. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Bus Students
For safety reasons, all bus students are expected to ride the bus daily. When you want your child(ren) to be excused from riding the bus please contact Warner Transportation at 546-4022.
Traffic Safety
For the safety of our students, it is necessary for our school busses to have parking space in front of the school. Please respect the parking signs. They are posted to ensure that our students arrive and leave the school safely. No Stopping Zone signs mean no parking or stopping at any time. No Parking Zone signs mean no parking at any time, however, you may drop off or pick up.
Thank you in advance for respecting our school bus drop off and pick up area and our staff parking lot as an area reserved for staff parking.
School Safety Drills
During the school year we practice a variety of safety drills so everyone knows what to do in case of a fire, an intruder in the school or if we need to evacuate the school and/or school grounds.
One safety drill we practice is called “Code White”. During this drill we practice what to do if an intruder should come into our school. This drill requires that all students are in a classroom with a teacher or school staff member. Staff will close and secure the classroom door. Prior to ending the drill, school administration will check to see if each room has a secure door.
Student Attendance
We appreciate you informing the school office when your child is absent from school or arriving late. If you are unable to talk to someone (non-school hours or the line is busy) please leave a message as our answering service will cut in automatically. Whenever a child is absent from school and we have not heard from a parent/guardian we will make a reasonable attempt to discover why the child is absent. Keeping the school apprised of absences is critical to the safety of each student.
Students Being Picked Up During School Hours
On a daily basis, students leave school during the day for a variety of reasons. For the safety of these students, we are requesting that parents/guardians come into the school to pick up their children. Students may be picked up at the office or their classroom. In following this procedure, we will know that all children have safely left the school.
Head Lice
Every school year there are concerns regarding Head Lice. Head lice are common in school-age children but they do not cause serious health problems and most children have no symptoms. However they do spread easily by sharing personal items, such as head gear, towels and combs, coats/jackets and sharing the same bed and/or through close head to head contact with an infested person.
Anyone can get head lice no matter how clean and careful they are.
Head lice and their eggs are tiny and seen only with careful checking of the hair and scalp. The nits may look like dandruff, but cannot be flicked or blown off. People with head lice may have an itchy scalp. Nits (eggs) can survive for over a week.
If you discover that your child has lice or nits, please notify the school. Your child will not be identified. A generic, informational letter will be sent home with classroom students advising parents/guardians how to check for lice and nits as well as treatment procedures.
Electronic Devices
There is no student usage of electronic devices during school time. The school is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen items.

Welcome (back) to the Johnson Area Music program! We are looking forward to working with all of the Henry Braun band students this year. Special welcome to our new beginner band students! Full band is on Day 2 (am) at Johnson Collegiate beginning on Wed. Sept. 15. Henry Braun sectionals will be on Day 1 & 4 (morning) beginning on Frid. Sept. 17. Students will receive band calendars and start-up letters early in September. Band schedules are also posted outside the band room at Henry Braun.

We look forward to making music with you this year!
January 2010
Lots of fun things going on this month (school dances, basketball). Please see the school calendar by clicking on the events link in the sidebar.
Alien Numbers
(told by Tobey)
Students in the grade 2 & 3 class used flats, rods and units to create an alien. Shapes were placed on a blank piece of paper to make an alien shape. After we liked our creation, we traced around each shape. Each of the shapes was coloured and then cut out and glued back together. Other students observed our alien and then wrote down the number of units, the number of rods and the number of flats and guessed the total number represented by the alien.
Take a look. Can you figure out any of these numbers?

Readers Theatre
Readers Theatre is a great way to build fluency and a fun way to read. The beauty is that it requires no props or sets. Children use their voice to portray character and therefore are encouraged to use their voice to read with expression. In January some of our grade 2's made podcasts of their scripts. Have a listen.

Fine Arts Assembly
Students at Henry Braun were treated to a fine display of talent. Performances included dances, fiddle, piano and vocal selections as well as guitar and drum performances. Congratulations to all of our students who performed today.
Podcasts
Some of our students have done podcasts. Our grade 2 literacy groups have been working on elements of a story. They completed story maps and then did podcasts using their retells. View them here.
Here is a sample.

Outstanding Youth Philanthropist Award
Congratulations to Karlee, who received the Association for Fundraising Professionals (Regina) Outstanding Youth Philanthropist Award as part of the organization’s National Philanthropy Day Event on November 13th. Karlee was nominated for the award for her extraordinary leadership and involvement with the Alzheimer Society Of Saskatchewan’s Forget-Me-Not Walk that is held each January. In the six years that Karlee has participated, she has raised slightly over $6,000 in pledges for the walk. With Karlee's help, students are learning more about the disease and are getting involved in their communities to help.

November 6 Remembrance Day Program
Our students did a wonderful job. Thanks to the choir, the Readers Theatre group, our wreath bearers, and all Braun students and staff. The final song sung by the entire school called "Just One Candle" was very moving and left us with a strong message to "shine our light for peace"
.
You can watch the movie Mark's Poppy here.
