Grade 8's (and anyone else in our community that might be interested),
We have recently read three stories relating to hockey. A underpinning connection in all three stories were forms of racism. We had some excellent discussions around this topic.
As I was watching television today I couldn't help but think about the stories we shared through our connections and add some new thoughts to my brain. I remember when I was your age (quite a long time ago). At that time my father loved to watch Hockey Night in Canada and it was a regular event in our house. Later in life when I moved out of the country and came back to visit, the familiar anthem of the television show told us Hockey Night in Canada was starting. All those that were interested in watching the game gathered to watch.
If you remember last spring, Hockey Night in Canada learned it could no longer use that anthem. They announced a competition to find a new anthem. If you go to the anthem challenge website you can hear the five finalists. Well, I can tell you I usually don't bother voting for Survivors, Canadian Idols or Maria's but today I felt compelled to vote. I wonder if the former song was so much a part of my history that I wanted to be a part of the new making of history or if being able to listen to the finalists online and cast my vote at that moment made it more meaningful.
Needless to say, all the entries are very good. However, one caught my ear (and eye). One of the entries is from a 13 year old boy. Not only is it really good, but I think it would be amazing for a 13 year old to go down in history as the composer of the Hockey Night in Canada anthem. He could be as famous as Rocket Richard (remember him from the Hockey Sweater) and he is a musician, not a hockey player!! What do you think??
(By the way, I think this qualifies for a text to text, text to life and text to world connection.....see if you can tell me why on Monday.)

Making Connections
I think it was quite a "coup" when TSN bought the rights to the HNIC theme. CBC dragged its heels a bit and probably thought no one would even think of taking the anthem from them.
However, a new anthem will be found and the CBC found a creative way to do it. If a 13 year old can win this, it will definitely be unique.
Good job with the blog Laurie! I have a grade seven blog as well. Check out http://ss2008.edublogs.org/
Congrats. on convocating.
Dave
Coup
Thanks for your reply Dave. I like your word choice (coup).
I'm off to check out your grade 7 comments.

That would be so cool for a 13 year old to win the competition...I would of picked the same song we had before but I didn't get time to do it so whatever. I think that is a great opportunity for kids our age to win stuff like that.
Winning
It sure is a great opportunity. What do you think it would take to win?
anthem
I think that it would be really cool if some one my age won. But if I was him I wouldn't really like to win because then I would have to go to all these interveiws. It would still be cool. Nothing will be as good as the old one.

Old One
Agreed. The old one was pretty good. Do you know anything about TSN using it?
Anthem
I think it would be a great accomplishment to have my song picked as the hockey night in canada theme song. It is cool that they are changing it but i will always remember it by the old one but new generations will remember by what ever one is picked as the hockey night in canada theme song.
New Generations
I hadn't thought of that. It will only be traditional for us. My one year old nephew will probably not remember the old one. Good thinking!!
Anthem
All the songs are very well done. I think the 13 year old boy's song is very well done. I wonder if he had problems writing the song I say good luck to him.

Good Luck
I think the teacher won and the 13 year old came in second. It was very well done and as others have said, "He should be proud of his accomplishments."
I think that would be so
I think that would be so cool to have your song on Hockey Night In Canada! I mean imagine, knowing you have made hockey history(sort of)! I just hope if he becomes famous or something that he doesn't get caught up in all the drama and stays true to himself.
Melissa :P
History
Yep, making history would be pretty cool. Hopefully the artists remain true to themselves and keep on composing great music.
great
I think everybody's anthem was great especially the one that was thirteen years old.
I hope that he wins the contest but everyone's anthem sounded great!
Julie P.
Anthems
I too enjoyed all of the anthems. They were great. I think the young boy came in second.
Yoowha
I think the thirteen years old kid is a genius because he composed a song and now, he's at the final round.
Everyone's songs sound great but I wish the thirteen years old kid win!
Good Job!
Winner
I thought the teacher had won.
Hockey Night Kelsey.m
i think it would be to be there and experence that hearing the natal anthom play. If i was that 13 year old boy i try wonder what to say or what to act like.on time in my life i want to experence that and feel like that 13 year old boy did. i hope everyone can feel something like that in there life.
Experience
Yes that would be quite the experience. That 13 year old boy should be quite proud of himself.
National anthem
I think that it would be a really cool experience to write a national anthem and and hear it being played all over! I wonder if the 13 year old boy struggled to find just the right words or if it kind-of just came to him.
Chelsea
Wondering
I wonder how hard it was to write that tune too. Nothing comes into my head when I sit down and try to write a song. I play piano but composing is another story.
Anthem
It was a musical score that he created. I wonder if it just came to him also. It did say that he comes from a musical family.
Maackenziee Ruddyy
I think it would be amazing for a 13 year old boy to be the winner of that contest. I listened to the song and I was so amazed by how in depth it was and how good of detail he had. I would have definitely voted for him if I would've had the chance. This gives me an idea for a good connection. When my cousin was younger he used to professionaly write songs. Can anyone else make a connection to mine?
Professional Song Writer
I think that is so cool. What kind of songs did your cousin write? Does he still write? What instrument did he play? Yes, the anthem written by the 13 year old had lots of detail. I am proud of him (even though I don't know him).
Impressive!
I think it's cool that a 13 year old would be able to do something like sing in front of all those people I'd be scared out of my wits! Anyway I'm impressed that he did that.

Video
I think he made a video. So I wonder if he actually had to play in front of people? I know that I really don't like seeing myself on video but it easier talking to a machine than hundreds of people. Isn't it cool that so many of us could see it because it was online?
Hockey Night In Canada
We did not like that song because....it doesnt have any words in it and its annoying....We like the older version better!
Brandi & Desi<3
Honesty
Nothin like being honest!! I take it you don't really like instrumentals?? Maybe you could write some lyrics for the song!!
I like how you talked about
I like how you talked about you and your dad watching hockey night in canada me and my dad watch that show to but it is not a terdishin
Tradition
My boys and their dad don't really watch Hockey Night in Canada now....but they do watch baseball, especially now when the World Series is on! Go Phillies!!
Making Connections
Wow! I can not believe that a thirteen year old are age sang the Hockey Night in Canada anthem. Can anyone imagine that if one of are classmates got the chance to sing the Hockey Night in Canada anthem?
Ashley. M
Classmates
Okay...who is going to write lyrics for the song and then who is going to sing it?? I think it would be awesome if someone in our class tried to sing the new anthem.
The hockey night in canada
The hockey night in canada song is a really chatchy song, and i like it.
Hanna D'Andrea
Catchy
It is catchy. Did you know the winner of the challenge is a teacher??
The hockey night in canada
The hockey night in canada song is a really chatchy song, and i like it.

Wow
Wow, I think that it would be amazing if the thirteen year old boy won the contest! How cool would that be to go down in history as the person who created the hockey night in canada anthem. My family watches those contests on t.v but we never vote for them.
Kaitlyn N
Contests
Me too....the only time I have ever voted was for this because I thought it was so cool that a 13 year old made the finalists list. Even Randy Bachman didn't make the final 5. Anyone know who Randy Bachman is?
The Hockey Contest
I think that although the teacher won it was probably for the best because for a 13 year old to be under all that pressure all the time would be immensly difficult. My favorite entry was the teachers anyway so I am glad that he won.
P.S. Goodbye to Dave who had to leave our school today to go to Laval. However he is still living in the area so we'll see him around.
Brandon G.
Teacher Song
Really! I liked the song written by the teacher but it wasn't my favorite. Did you listen to the orginal submissions. That is what sold me on the 13 year old submission.
That would've been cool to
That would've been cool to be entered to have the new hockey night in canada anthem, especially if you're 13 years old. I wonder what his emothions were when e found out he was oneof the top 3. FROM DAMON!
Great Wondering
I wonder too. I suspect he felt honored. I wonder if he felt a lot of pressure. We should have rallied all the 13 year olds we new to vote for him.
I think that it would be
I think that it would be pretty sweet of the thought of knowing that if you won and when you watch Hockey night in Canada, That YOU wrote that song, I would feel proud of myself.. people would probably know you all around. Though the thought of being some what famous is disturbing. It might be fun at first but don't you think it would get tiring?
xx
Marisa.
Being Famous
Well, I think I kind of agree. Sometimes it is really nice not to be famous. Other thoughts?
Hockey theme song reply
This kid must be really proud to achieve such an accomplishment for such a young age. If it was me I probably wouldn't of even tried because out of the 100's of thousands of people that were likely trying I wouldn't of been confident enough to enter. But now this kid has a memory to share with the rest of his family and the story can be passed on from generations to generations. This also connects me to the world because when President George Bush got elected over time they didn't like the new change in president and they were hating on George Bush. I think that is the way the song will be because everyone is used to the old song so they wont give it a chance.
Bush
I find your connection really interesting. You are right. People didn't like Bush because it was a change from democrats to republicans. I wonder what will happen if Obama wins the election and becomes president. Will everyone give him a chance or will they be quick to criticize?
Hockey Night in Canada
I'm not that fond of the new anthem. It doesn't really seem that hockey like. I liked the old anthem, I wonder why they needed a new one? maybe it's just me... but I don't like change. I didn't hear the entry from the 13 year old. But, I bet it was awesome.
-Nicole.
New Anthem
You know to me it sound too much like you are at a symphony rather than a hockey game. It will take some getting used too!
Wow I can't believe that a
Wow I can't believe that a boy our age has won such s big contest. If I won a contest like that I know I would be very excited so I can't imagine how happy that boy and the boy's family would be. Everytime I hear the new hockey song I think of how many people are listening to the song and how proud the boy must be knowing that millions of people are listening to the song he wrote. I never really thought about how many connections you make in life but now that you (Ms. Gatzke) has taught all these new ways to connect I am realizing that I am making more and more connections everyday.

Connections
Well I really enjoyed reading your comment. Remember when we were learning about connections and I told you that your brain really wants to connect to what it already knows. Well it is true. Once I learned about this important reading strategy, I started using it more also. Do you see now why I call it a thinking strategy instead of a reading strategy. It isn't just about reading. Your brain likes to connect old information to new. Yep that boy must be proud and you should be proud that you are thinking!!
The new hockey song!
Wow I can't believe that a thirteen year old wont that contest. I can't imagine how happy I would be if I won that contest. I think it will take a long time for people to know this new hockey song because the old song is a well known song all over the world. I wonder where that boy is from? I think that the boy will be in the newspaper but I don't think that he would be followed but reporters and random people on the street though. :)
Kelsey R
Boy
I thought I read that the boy lived in Ontario. You know you and I would both be happy about winning that context because I think $100 000 comes with the win. How do you think the teacher feels that won it?
