Traditionally math has been seen as being mainly about number computation. However, reading is also an important skill in math. Comment on reading strategies that you use in math and how the strategies help you understand the math you are doing.
Most times without noticing when I'm reading a good book I have the pictures going through my mind like a movie then I flip the page and lose the movie for a second but, when don't understand a word I read ahead if that does not work I normally ask some body. Sometimes i don't get what they are talking about in a book so I reread and if I have to reread again.
I am glad to you are going to use rereading in math. The examples in the text are there for a reason. I often have to read them over a number of times.
Hi Ms.Gatzke, some strategies that I use at home or at school when I'm doing schoolwork are: sometimes I use a chart or table to explain things better in a more layed-out way, use pictures to cross out if I need to and other times I just simply ask a parent or teacher for help and ask them to explain to me how to do the work properly.
Good for you for using charts and tables. They help us to organize our math thinking and often we need to use them to set up what we have done in a systematic or organized way. We know who we will come to when we need help with this.
i have been waiting for an assinment because if we keep just focus on reading we'll never actually get around to and assinment and i don't like math makes sence because it doesn't i understand that you're trying to make it easier for everyone but it's not helping i hope to see results soon
Some strategies I use to hep me with math are...If I do not get the question I go back and read it over and over again. If I still don't get it I will ask a friend, parent or teacher for help. Also I read the bold lettering to see if it makes more sense. I don't just sit at my desk and stare at the paper for an hour because I will have a pile of homework to do after school. That's how I use reading in math.
my stragies is using the paper to solve the problems or read the problem again that stragies help me a lot like make me understand what is that mean and i use the the dictionary to figure out the words
Hi
Some of the strategies I use are if I don't get it the first time I go back, reread the instructions and look at the examples. If I still don't get it I ask someone beside me. If they don't get it either I ask the teacher. Or if I'm at home I'll ask my parents or brother. Also i could also ask some of my friends.

I agree with Cassie. Using strategies is way better than staring at the page for an hour and not get anything done. Math isn't my best subject, so I have to think hard to try to figure out the question. I am not a human calculator like some people I know. For math, here is what I try to help me understand the concept. First, I try to dig deeper and understand what is most important about the question. Then, I guess and check on a scrap piece of paper if it is a really confusing question. If I am not sure of my answer I try narrowing it down into smaller parts. If I still don't get it, I can whisper to my friend and ask for help. If they do not understand it, I can ask my parents. Hopefully they would understand it. But if they don't, I can always ask Ms. Gatzke.
Yes, guess and check is a great strategy. That is so important because you show you are thinking about what your response to the question is even before you start doing it. I'd really like it though if you include the work you do in your notebook. It gives me information about how you go about solving a problem.
Don't worry....I am not a human calculator either. It is okay to have to think things out in a logical way. It sounds to me like that is what you are doing.
Some strategies i use when i'm reading are the reread strategy if you don't get something go back and read it again untill you get it and if you still don't get it ask a teacher or parent for help. Also if I see bold writing i know it must be important. Oh also if i don't get it if there are examples or instructions I read those too. These strategies help me to better understand math because they help me understand the math instead of staring at the page for a hour and having tons of homework.Hope this helps!!! You are using some fine strategies to help you understand what you read. Often we don't bother rereading because it takes more time. When I realize I am not getting it, that is one of the first strategies I employ. I couldn't live without those examples in a math textbook. They show me step by step what I need to do. I can sure think of a lot of things I would rather be doing than staring at the page for an hour. I'm sure you can too and am glad to see that you are utilizing some reading strategies in math.
Hello Mrs.Gatzke. I have some reading strategies that I use when doing math. If it doesn't make sence to me the first time that I read it, I go back and reread it a second time, then if I still don't understand what I am reading then I ask a teacher or friend for help. And as I am reading I also ask myself questions and see if I can make any connections/answers. I hope this is what your were looking for as an answer or something close to it. Michaela
Your words making sense are very wise. Any time we read, we must be asking ourselves, "Does this make sense?" If it doesn't make sense then we have to figure out something to help us make sense. Asking a question or making a connection are important strategies. When we connect the math we are doing to math we already know we help our brain make sense of our new math. Realizing that we don't know and asking someone who might be able to help us are also important learning strategies. Sounds like you are using some smart strategies to help yourself understand what you read.
Thank you. Yes I am, I also read the Headings and Subheadings aswell to help me to understand what I am reading in a book and text book. And I am replying to you because you said to check your blog, so I did, and I love spending time on the computer. Michaela
Yes, me too. I really like using the computer for learning. I also like using it as a tool to help me write and read. It's one of my most helpful tools (most of the time).

Reading over is a good strategy. Remember to make sure as you are reading it over that you ask yourself "Do I get this?" "Does it make sense?"

Don't worry, you will be doing lots of assignments. However, to be succesful at math, you also must be able to read and make sense of the text book.
